HDX-MS Workshop at BSRC Fleming – November 27, 2025

On Thursday, November 27th, 2025, BSRC Fleming hosted a hands-on Workshop on Hydrogen/Deuterium eXchange Mass Spectrometry (HDX-MS), organised through the Masstruct Project in collaboration with the Politis Lab, and also supported by a Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) International Partnering Award (id: BB/X018326/1).
The workshop provided participants with an in-depth introduction to HDX-MS, a powerful analytical technique for studying protein structure, conformational dynamics, and molecular interactions.
Throughout the day, attendees explored the fundamental principles of HDX-MS, gained practical experience in real-time data acquisition, and learned approaches for optimising experimental design and instrument performance. Overall, 22 participants attended the workshop.
Speakers
- Juan Pablo Rincón Pabón
Post-Doctoral Researcher, University of Manchester / Politis Lab - Agni Gavriilidou
Post-Doctoral Researcher, BSRC Fleming / Masstruct Project
Their combined expertise provided participants with both strong theoretical foundations and practical, instrument-focused insights into HDX-MS workflows, data quality, and troubleshooting. The interactive format encouraged discussion, problem-solving, and active engagement between trainees and instructors, creating an excellent environment for skill development and knowledge exchange.

A Successful Day of Learning and Collaboration
The workshop brought together researchers from diverse scientific backgrounds, fostering meaningful interaction around mass spectrometry, structural biology, and advanced biophysical techniques. The Masstruct Team extends sincere thanks to all participants for their enthusiasm and to the speakers for their valuable contributions.
