The 3rd Leader Seminar held on the 2nd of April at BSRC Alexander Fleming, entitled “Combining native MS with synthetic biology to target intricate membrane proteins”, was delivered by our Scientific Advisory Board Member Dr Idlir Liko (Ellison Institute of Technology, Oxford, UK).
In this seminar, Dr Liko presented how native mass spectrometry can be applied to study membrane proteins and their interactions with drugs within their natural lipid environment. He highlighted how this approach enables a deeper understanding of how chemical modifications influence drug binding. Furthermore, he discussed the use of non-canonical amino acids—incorporating non-standard building blocks—as a promising strategy to expand the possibilities for targeting proteins in future therapeutic applications.
